Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
