Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
