Trump's Framework of Retribution and Reward

Donald Trump's intense urge for payback has rapidly transformed into a structured framework. During the year since his election, the president's fury and impulses have taken on the shape of official policies in ways analogous to historical authoritarian systems. Federal figures who fail to comply are summarily removed and substituted by supporters. Political leaders who confront him risk legal action, trial and sanctions. Critics have been categorized under presidential orders as “unpatriotic”, “against faith communities” and “opposing economic freedom”, and threatened with legal action as “extremists”.

Government Institutions Remade

Each case involving legal action of Trump's enemies and immunity for supporters displays its own unique qualities. But, regardless of their specific character, they exemplify manifestations of what has emerged as a systematic method. Such events are far from random. The administration's removal of federal attorneys and FBI agents, coupled with his placement of supporters in high-level posts, commenced rapidly, promptly took on a regularity, and has now been formed into a structure. DoJ and the Federal Bureau have been remade into partisan organizations under his direct orders to execute his demands. Wrongdoing has been made standard. This is the system of punishment.

Management is more concerned with punishing the leader's alleged opponents than they are with defending our national security.

Internal the System

The origin of this mechanism has been revealed in the lawsuit of multiple former top FBI officials filed in September in the federal court in DC against top official an administration figure and attorney general Pam Bondi for illegal termination in “a campaign of revenge against the officials for what administration figures considered to be a refusal to exhibit proper allegiance”. According to the filing that a former acting director, the previous temporary head, recounts a discussion in which he “openly admitted the unlawfulness of his actions”.

The official had attempted to defend law enforcement officers from being dismissed, the lawsuit alleges. Patel advised him that “they” – understood by him to be the White House and DoJ – had ordered him to dismiss all those who they identified as having participated in a legal probe against him. The filing goes on: “The director clarified that he had to terminate the personnel his superiors told him to dismiss, because his chance to retain his own job relied on the dismissal of the officials who were involved in matters involving the leader. Patel noted that there was no option he or the official could do to halt these or any other dismissals, because ‘the bureau tried to incarcerate the President in prison and he remembers.’” When Driscoll advised him he was disregarding the FBI's own policies, he supposedly said “he recognized that and he realized the nature of the swift terminations were almost certainly unlawful”.

Broad Effects

Since the director's claimed admission to the official, the justice department and the Federal Bureau have been weakened and redirected for Trump's revenge apparatus. Several of the bureau's high-ranking agents were dismissed or pushed out in the early weeks of the government. About thousands of lawyers at the justice department have accepted a “early exit scheme”. At least several federal prosecutors, such as those in the New York office, stepped down in protest over what they regarded as political interference in abandoning the legal action against the New York City mayor, the mayor, in return for his collaboration with the administration's Immigration and Customs Enforcement roundups of foreign nationals. The public integrity section of the justice department, which oversees ethical violations, has been cut down to minimal staff. The rights protection unit has been devastated: seventy percent of its employees has left. 33% of top officials at DoJ have resigned. The division implementing conservation statutes has lost half its leadership.

Incentives and Punishments

Concerning the mayor's situation, the temporary lawyer for the federal division, Danielle Sassoon, resigned in protest against what she characterized as the “quid pro quo”. Tom Homan, his “immigration leader,” was present as the enforcer with Adams on Fox News to declare: “If he doesn't come through, I'll be back in New York City.”. And, another figure, earlier the justice department figure and a ex-lawyer, who negotiated the deal, was granted an judicial position, a potential stepping stone to the judicial branch.

The president's protection for offenses carried out while in office, awarded by the extraordinary ruling of the conservative on the highest court, thus preventing his prosecution over the political violence and safeguarding his electoral prospects for the presidential race, is the cornerstone on which he depends to protect his loyalists. Given this protection, he has been empowered to enable wrongdoing. The consequence of the judicial ruling permeates his presidency and the GOP completely. Trump v United States has escalated.
