The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
