Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the right to question certain decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
